What This Court Handles
Scottsdale City Court handles criminal misdemeanors, civil traffic cases, juvenile matters, parking and photo enforcement, and protective orders.
Common charges include misdemeanor DUI, assault, disorderly conduct, shoplifting and theft below the felony threshold, criminal damage, drug paraphernalia, and criminal traffic offenses such as reckless driving and driving on a suspended license.
The court also administers Defensive Driving Class and the Children are Priceless Passengers program for qualifying traffic matters.
Felonies are not resolved here. A felony arising in Scottsdale is handled by Maricopa County Superior Court.
What to Know
Scottsdale generates a high volume of DUI and photo enforcement cases. The city has historically been an aggressive enforcement jurisdiction, particularly around the entertainment district and along the 101. That affects both the volume of cases and how they are charged.
The prosecutor is the Scottsdale City Prosecutor. Charging practices, plea policies and diversion eligibility are set locally. The same conduct can move differently in Scottsdale than in Phoenix, Tempe or Mesa a few miles away.
A class 1 misdemeanor carries up to six months in jail and a $2,500 fine plus surcharges. The collateral consequences frequently matter more than the sentence, particularly for professional licensing, background checks, immigration status for non-citizens, and firearm rights where a domestic violence designation attaches.
Appeals go to Maricopa County Superior Court, not the court of appeals.
