What This Court Handles
As Mohave County’s general jurisdiction trial court, it hears all felony criminal cases, misdemeanors not otherwise assigned by law, civil matters above the justice court limit, family law, probate and juvenile matters. It also hears appeals from the county’s justice and municipal courts.
Why Mohave Catches Travellers
Interstate 40 crosses the county from the California line, and US 93 carries traffic between Phoenix and Las Vegas. Mohave County also borders both Nevada and California, and a large share of its criminal cases involve people who live in neither Kingman nor Arizona.
Kingman is roughly three and a half hours from Phoenix. That distance is a practical problem worth planning around rather than a reason to resolve a case without looking at it properly.
What to Know
Felonies reach this court in one of two ways — by grand jury indictment, or after a preliminary hearing in a justice court where a judge decides whether probable cause exists and can dismiss the charges outright if it does not.
The county attorney sets local charging and plea policy. Practice here is not identical to Maricopa County, and assuming it is can cost you.
Missing a setting produces a warrant regardless of how far you had to travel.
