What This Court Handles
As Yuma County’s general jurisdiction trial court, it hears all felony criminal cases, misdemeanors not otherwise assigned by law, civil matters above the justice court limit, family law, probate and juvenile matters. It also hears appeals from the county’s justice and municipal courts.
What Shapes the Yuma Caseload
Interstate 8 runs east to west through the county between San Diego and Phoenix, and Yuma sits on both an international border and a state line. That geography produces a distinctive mix of cases, including a high proportion involving people who do not live in the county.
Yuma also has a large seasonal population and a substantial agricultural workforce, which means immigration status is more frequently a live concern here than in other Arizona counties. Where it is, the immigration consequences of a plea can matter more than the sentence, and they need to be considered before anything is agreed rather than after.
What to Know
Felonies reach this court in one of two ways — by grand jury indictment, or after a preliminary hearing in a justice court where a judge decides whether probable cause exists and can dismiss the charges outright if it does not.
The county attorney sets local charging and plea policy. Practice here is not identical to Maricopa County, and assuming it is can cost you.
Missing a setting produces a warrant regardless of how far you had to travel.
