What This Court Handles
As Coconino County’s general jurisdiction trial court, it hears all felony criminal cases, misdemeanors not otherwise assigned by law, civil matters above the justice court limit, family law, probate and juvenile matters. It also hears appeals from the county’s justice and municipal courts.
What Makes Coconino Different
Three things drive the caseload. Interstate 40 and Interstate 17 intersect at Flagstaff, producing a steady volume of traffic and drug transport cases involving people from out of county and out of state. Northern Arizona University brings a substantial student population and the offences that follow it — DUI, minor in possession, disorderly conduct. And tourism to the Grand Canyon and the winter snow season add visitors unfamiliar with Arizona roads and Arizona law.

What to Know
Felonies reach this court in one of two ways — by grand jury indictment, or after a preliminary hearing in a justice court where a judge decides whether probable cause exists and can dismiss the charges outright if it does not.
The county attorney sets local charging and plea policy. Practice here is not identical to Maricopa County, and assuming it is can cost you.
Missing a setting produces a warrant regardless of how far you had to travel.
