The court also operates a division in Camp Verde. Your paperwork will specify which location your case is assigned to — the two are roughly an hour apart, so confirm before travelling.
What This Court Handles
As Yavapai County’s general jurisdiction trial court, it hears all felony criminal cases, misdemeanors not otherwise assigned by law, civil matters above the justice court limit, family law, probate and juvenile matters. It also hears appeals from the county’s justice and municipal courts.
Why Yavapai Sees Out-of-County Defendants
Interstate 17 runs the length of the county, carrying traffic between Phoenix and Flagstaff, and State Route 89A brings heavy tourist volume through Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon. A significant share of cases involve people who live somewhere else and were simply driving through.
Those cases still have to be answered in Yavapai County. Distance makes appearing inconvenient; it does not make the charge less serious.
What to Know
Felonies reach this court in one of two ways — by grand jury indictment, or after a preliminary hearing in a justice court where a judge decides whether probable cause exists and can dismiss the charges outright if it does not.
The county attorney sets local charging and plea policy. Practice here is not identical to Maricopa County, and assuming it is can cost you.
Missing a setting produces a warrant regardless of how far you had to travel.
