What This Court Handles

As the county’s general jurisdiction trial court, it hears all felony criminal cases, misdemeanors not otherwise assigned by law, civil matters above the justice court limit, family law, probate and juvenile matters. It also hears appeals from the county’s justice and municipal courts.

Why Pinal Catches People Out

A large share of Pinal County cases arise from traffic stops on Interstate 10 and State Route 347 involving people who do not live in the county and often do not live in Arizona. Those cases still have to be answered in Florence.

Being charged in a county you were only driving through is not a reason to plead quickly to make it go away. It is a reason to have someone appear on your behalf where the rules allow it, and to have the case looked at properly before anything is resolved.

What to Know

The prosecutor is the Pinal County Attorney’s Office. Its charging and plea practices are its own and differ from Maricopa County.

Felonies reach this court by grand jury indictment or by preliminary hearing in a justice court, where a judge can dismiss the charges outright if probable cause is lacking.

Distance is a practical problem, not a legal one. Florence is roughly an hour from central Phoenix and further from Tucson. Missed settings produce warrants regardless of how far someone had to drive.
