What This Court Handles
The court comprises 53 judicial officers sitting across five divisions — criminal, civil, family law, juvenile and probate — each with its own presiding judge.
On the criminal side that means all felony prosecutions, misdemeanors not assigned elsewhere by law, and appeals from the justice and municipal courts within the county.
How a Felony Reaches This Court
The same two routes apply here as anywhere in Arizona. A case can proceed by grand jury indictment, where the county attorney presents the matter and the defense is not present, or by preliminary hearing in a justice court, where a judge decides whether probable cause exists and either requires the defendant to answer in superior court or dismisses the charges.
Which route a case takes affects the timeline and what the defense sees, and when. It is frequently determined within days of arrest.
What to Know
The prosecutor is the Pima County Attorney’s Office, which sets its own charging and plea policies. Practice in Pima County is not identical to Maricopa, and assuming otherwise is a mistake.
Misdemeanors do not start here. Depending on where the conduct occurred, a misdemeanor begins in a Tucson or other city court, or in one of the county justice courts.
Appearance dates are not optional. Missing a setting can produce a warrant and jeopardise release conditions.
